📜 Background

The Gessho Sect was originally a heretical offshoot of a Buddhist school in the Central Plains (today's Shuntian Dynasty), founded several hundred years ago by an eminent monk named Zen Master Huiguang. He declared openly that the five Buddhist precepts should not simply follow ancient custom, and proposed: "If a person does evil, compassion must be cut off; if living beings suffer, breaking the precepts is the Way." He allowed monks to marry, eat meat, bear arms, and take life, holding that "the Buddha-heart lies in intention, not in rules" — and for this he was shunned by orthodox Buddhism and branded a "demonic heretical sect."

Zen Master Huiguang led more than a thousand followers far to the east, where they put down roots on the northern plateau of the Moonrise Empire and built "White Bone Ridge Temple" among the snowy ridges. There they rebuilt their doctrine, blending in local folk customs, traditions of war, and practices of cultivation, until it evolved into the Gessho Sect of today.

They believe that "the palm is compassion, and also an instrument for punishing evil," and they fused the Buddha's palm with Chan thought into a martial art, developing their unique "Way of the Buddha's Palm." Over a century, Gessho warrior monks took part in many daimyo wars and in the people's defense of their homes, and the local people gradually came to revere them as "the army that guards the Buddha."

The Buddha Realm: The current sect master, Tsukigoshi Genshin, is both a daimyo and a high priest, and has established an autonomous "Buddha Realm" on the northern plateau. Within the realm are dozens of temples, tens of thousands of faithful, and an elite warrior-monk army, the "Roka Legion." The Gessho Sect is not only a martial Buddhist order but also the most immovable regional power in the Moonrise Empire — any daimyo who wants a hand in the north must first get past the Gessho Sect.

🏔️ Geography and Key Locations

White Bone Ridge Temple: The head temple of the Gessho Sect, atop the snowy ridges of the Moonrise Empire's northern plateau. It is built into the mountainside, tier upon tier, so that from afar it looks like a white mountain city. Within are a main hall, a bell tower, a scripture hall, warrior-monk training grounds, granaries, and an armory — a fortress-temple able to sustain itself.

Roka Legion Encampment: A military camp at the foot of White Bone Ridge Temple, home to the Gessho Sect's most elite warrior-monk army. The camp has a drilling ground, stables, an armory, and granaries, and can quarter three thousand warrior monks at once. The legion's banner bears a golden Buddha's palm on a white field, and the local people call it the "Buddha's Palm Banner."

Compassion Ferry: A ferry landing at the southern edge of the Buddha Realm, the realm's gateway to the outside world. A market at the landing sells the grain, medicinal herbs, and handicrafts the realm produces.

⚔️ Outline of Gessho Martial Arts

Gessho martial arts are built on the framework of "One Sutra, Five Arts": beneath the foundational Hongan-kyo are five disciplines — inner art, palm, halberd, Buddhist seals, and footwork. In principle the sect does not shy away from killing — "the palm can spread the Dharma, the halberd can subdue demons" — and all of it is for protecting the people and the Dharma.

Growth in skill is cultivation: with every village defended and every enemy driven back, the Buddha-heart grows firmer and the martial arts advance.

The Dharma counters the ninja: the Gessho Sect's "True Sight Seal" and "Chan Quake Splits the Sky" can pierce stealth and tear open the shadows of ninjutsu, making them the natural enemy of the Kaga Clan's ninja school.

📿 Hongan-kyo / Gessho Hongan-kyo

Type: Guild Special Study. This is the Gessho Sect's foundational scripture study, playing the role for Gessho that the Taoist Canon plays for Shushan.

The Gessho Sect follows the "Gessho Original Vow Teaching," which grows out of Pure Land thought on Amida's Original Vow, yet differs sharply from orthodox Buddhism. They believe that Amida Buddha's Original Vow is not only about being reborn in the Western Pure Land after death, but should be carried out in the turbulent world of the living. When living beings suffer, a monk may not simply close his eyes and chant sutras; when the wicked run rampant, compassion too must become a wrathful palm.

So the Gessho Sect advances the "Doctrine of the Precept-Breaking Vow": eating meat, marrying, bearing arms, and taking life may violate the ancient precepts, but they do not necessarily betray the Buddha-heart. To break a precept in order to protect the people, protect the Dharma, or cut off evil karma is to bear karma on behalf of all living beings — and is itself the compassion of the Original Vow made manifest in the world.

Gessho monks often say: "The Pure Land is not only in the West; it can also stand beneath the snowy ridges. The Buddha's palm is not only for joining in prayer; it can also subdue demons." This became the philosophical foundation of the sect's Way of the Buddha's Palm and of the Roka Legion.

Everyone who joins the Gessho Sect must first study the Hongan-kyo to lay their foundation — one whose Dharma is shallow will never perfect even a superb technique. Attainment in every martial art of the sect (the Broken-Vow Bright Wheel Art, the Compassion Palm, the Roka Halberd, the Wheel-Light Guardian Seals, and Snow Shadow Steps) may never exceed the depth of one's Hongan-kyo.

📖 Inner Art: Broken-Vow Bright Wheel Art (BrokenVow)

The Gessho Sect's foundational inner art — the "Doctrine of the Precept-Breaking Vow" made real in the dantian. Ordinary practitioners pursue stillness and non-action through inner cultivation; the broken-precept monks do the opposite, tempering their true qi with the blood of meat-eating, the intent of warfare, and the wrath of subduing demons, turning greed and anger into power that protects the Dharma. The "bright wheel" is the heart wheel — a bright full moon in the sky that illuminates and breaks through the eighty-four thousand afflictions, and breaks through the bonds of the ancient precepts as well.

Cultivation deepens through the "Four Realms of the Bright Wheel": Moon Shadow (first glimpse of the qi channels) → Moonlight (inner breath clear and bright) → Moon Wheel (true qi forms a wheel) → Full Moon (true qi brimming, earning the title "Full-Moon Monk"). And the deeper the precepts are broken, the fiercer the true qi, following the "Five Steps of Breaking Precepts": Breaking the Fast → Breaking the Robe → Breaking Celibacy → Breaking Poverty → Breaking the Vow Against Killing (those who reach it are called "Broken-Precept Monks"). Those who complete it gain a body guarded like a bell, and grow in both inner force and resolve.

It trains two exertions alongside:

• 🔹 Break the Precept — Deliberately breaking a precept and harming one's own blood and qi to draw up the power of greed and anger, sharply boosting palm strength for a short time. "To break a precept for the Dharma is to bear karma on behalf of all living beings."
• 🔹 Transmute Demonic Intent — Turning the killing intent and malice an enemy throws at you into your own true qi; the stronger the enemy's lust to kill, the stronger your source of power.

✋ Palm Art: Compassion Palm (KindPalm)

The principal study of the Gessho Way of the Buddha's Palm — "the Buddha's palm is not only for joining in prayer; it can also subdue demons." The palm comes from compassion and lands to break demons: hardness hidden in a soft palm. It looks like a single palm that delivers karma and lifts suffering, yet its palm-wind spins like a wheel, fierce beyond compare; in parrying, it rebounds the enemy's force, delivering all evil karma into the palm of the hand. Three techniques, each building on the last:

• 🔹 Karma-Delivering Strike — "You sow the evil cause; I cut off the evil fruit." A single palm blasts out and severs the enemy's cause and effect: a hit throws the enemy off rhythm and costs them a move (Sever the Move / Sever the Thought / Sever the Karma).
• 🔹 Buddha's Wrath Shakes Heaven — The wrath of the Buddha, compassionate yet never indulgent. The palm force bursts like furious thunder, sweeping every enemy in the hall with one palm (Quake → Roar → Burst → Wrath; those who reach the last are called "Wrathful Buddha").
• 🔹 Nirvana Burning Palm [Forbidden] — Making oneself a lamp to light the darkness, and fuel to burn away evil. It burns away more than half of one's own blood and qi, turning it into a single palm with the power to set the heavens ablaze, harming oneself as it harms the enemy; used only in desperation, and it must be taught in person by one's master. (Burning Blood → Burning Life → Burning Self; the one who Burns Self dies together with the foe, and no one has ever performed it.)

🗡️ Halberd Art: Roka Halberd (RokaPike)

The Gessho Sect's defining supreme art, the signature weapon skill of the three thousand broken-precept monk soldiers of the Roka Legion.

In recent times the Gessho Sect changed the Roka Legion's standard long weapon from the monk's staff to the long halberd — "Roka" means the wheel of precepts, and to take the field with a halberd is to break the precepts with one's own body and bear karma on behalf of all living beings. The three forms of the old staff art were absorbed entirely into the halberd art.

The halberd is thirteen feet long, its blade like a new crescent moon; it sweeps in circles like a wheel and lands like thunder, seizing the initiative, sealing the meridians, and subduing demons. Three techniques, each building on the last:

• 🔹 Wheel of Rebirth Strike — A spinning horizontal sweep of the halberd, circling without end, one blow severing the enemy's killing intent and flow of qi.
• 🔹 Chan Quake Splits the Sky — The halberd falls like a wheel and a Chan tremor bursts outward; the shockwave breaks concealment, tearing open nearby stealth, illusions, and ninjutsu (a counter to the Kaga Clan).
• 🔹 Demon-Subduing Tremor — The halberd's point pierces the meridians and seals the channels, leaving the enemy unable to use techniques for several rounds.

🏮 Buddhist Seals: Wheel-Light Guardian Seals (LightSeal)

Laying down the incantation seals of the Buddha's wheel, casting through chanted seal-forming — to protect the body, to see clearly, and to subdue demons. The three seals each have their own role:

• 🔹 Body-Guarding Seal — Buddha-light condenses into a protective barrier that sharply reduces damage taken for several breaths, so blades, arrows, and spells can scarcely get through.
• 🔹 True Sight Seal — Draws Buddha-light into the eyes, letting you see in darkness as if in daylight and see through invisible enemies and lingering souls of the dead; it is precisely the method for countering Kaga ninjutsu stealth and for perceiving the blade-spirits of the Sword Tomb.
• 🔹 Demon-Subduing Seal — A seal placed on an enemy, bringing the demon-subduing power of the Buddha's wheel to bear; on a hit it holds them in place, unable to act, for several rounds, and the seal's strength grows with cultivation.

🍃 Footwork: Snow Shadow Steps (SnowShadow)

A lightness skill unique to the Gessho Sect, born for the snowy ridges of the north. The body moves light as snow and walks on fresh snow without leaving footprints. Four realms: Treading Snow (tread the snow without a trace) → Chasing the Wind (racing across the snow) → Traceless (too fast to be followed) → Snow Shadow (the body melts into the scenery, hard to detect).
