The Storm Thunder Sect is a powerful rising sect in the Changfeng Republic, founded jointly by Chen Wenbin and his sworn brother Lin Tianhao.
Chen Wenbin was born into a scholarly family of the Shuntian Dynasty. His father, Chen Hui, was an outer-gate disciple of the Holy Academy, and his mother, Lin Wanying, was a heroine of the Shushan Sect, so he was steeped in both letters and martial arts from childhood. But his father was persecuted by the Shuntian Dynasty's Grand Marshal Chang Yanjiao, and fled overseas with his mother, where Chen Wenbin was born.
Chen Wenbin's parents once drifted by chance to a deserted island. Hidden on the island was an ancient underground palace, still perfectly preserved after countless years. Inside, the two discovered texts left behind by sages of antiquity, recording in detail the "Art of Numbers" and the "Art of Investigating Things" โ skills that encompassed not only profound methods of calculation and deduction but also a unique understanding of how all things work and of ingenious mechanisms. Chen's parents felt this was a heaven-sent opportunity, studied the texts closely, and wove what they learned into their own foundations of martial arts and mathematics.
Chen Wenbin's parents wrote the knowledge they had learned and researched on the island into books and notes. After leaving the island, for various reasons, they entrusted their child to the Wealth Sect and returned to the mainland. But back in the Shuntian Dynasty, they fell victim to schemes and assassination, and their entire family was wiped out. Before they died, they entrusted what they had learned in the underground palace, along with the family's ancestral texts, to Chen Wenbin.
Once he came of age, he set out to roam the jianghu and made quite a name for himself. After many events, with the support of Kong Ning of the Wealth Sect and other friends, he decided to found the Storm Thunder Sect together on a mountain in the Changfeng Republic, hoping to unite the strength of like-minded people, build his power, and avenge the massacre of his family. The hope is that he will protect this inheritance, and, when the time is ripe, restore the Chen family's name and expose Chang Yanjiao's conspiracy.
Today, though still in its growing stage, the Storm Thunder Sect has taken in many exiles persecuted by the Shuntian Dynasty and many local heroes, becoming a force in the Changfeng Republic that cannot be ignored besides Thunderbolt Hall โ and another thorn in the Fist Gang's side.
๐๏ธ Geography and Key Locations
Storm Mountain: A steep, towering mountain in the northeast of the Changfeng Republic. Its main summit is called "Thunder Roar Peak," wreathed in cloud and mist all year, where the mountain wind howls like thunder. A waterfall called "Flying Thunder Falls" plunges from a height of a hundred zhang โ a natural training ground for Storm Thunder disciples' lightness skill.
Thunder Roar Peak Headquarters: The headquarters of the Storm Thunder Sect, built on a terrace at the top of Thunder Roar Peak. Its buildings are made of bluestone and giant timbers, rugged and imposing in style, blending into the mountain. The headquarters contains a council hall, martial training grounds, an armory, a scripture library, and other facilities.
Wind Gap Training Ground: An open field halfway up Storm Mountain where strong winds howl all year round. Storm Thunder disciples train their axe and blade arts here, using the wind to make training harder.
โ๏ธ Martial Arts of the Storm Thunder Sect
The Storm Thunder Sect's martial arts emphasize being "forceful, swift, and flowing with momentum to borrow strength," blending the martial foundations of the Shuntian Dynasty with the practical fighting style of the Changfeng Republic, and centering on three great elements: "wind, thunder, and mountain." Sect Leader Chen Wenbin is a heaven-sent genius who excels at mathematics and has fused mathematics, physics, and martial arts in a single furnace โ in battle he turns wind speed, sunlight, terrain, the enemy's build and footwork, even the instant they take a breath, into data, and in a flash calculates the one "optimal solution."
๐ช Storm Axe
The Storm Axe is a supreme art created by Chen Wenbin. When others train with the axe, they train strength; when he trains with the axe, he trains "calculation." Where that one axe-blow lands is always the fatal point the enemy must defend, and yet can never defend.
Gale Split: Swinging the axe to raise a wind that creates pressure differences and confuses the enemy's senses, then striking along geometric paths in a chain of cuts at the major acupoints all over their body.
Thunder Cleave: Calculating the point where a massive force is most concentrated as it bursts, then following the line of least resistance through the enemy's defenses to split the heavens with one axe.
Wind Shatter: Leaving layer upon layer of axe shadows in a chaotic onslaught to lure the enemy into empty air, while the true body strikes suddenly from the blind spot in their thinking.
Storm Fury: The pinnacle of the Storm Axe. Once the axe is swung, it carries the confusion of wind, the shifting of shadow, and the might of thunder all at once โ the real and the illusory giving birth to each other, all methods returning to one.
โ๏ธ Storm Blade
The Storm Blade was not created by Chen Wenbin alone but developed together with his sworn brother Lin Tianhao; the two fused the strengths of their own martial arts into a blade art that balances hard and soft and moves freely in advance and retreat.
Twin Strike: A blade drawn in an instant, like lightning splitting the sky, with extremely fast attack speed.
Wind Thunder: A string of blade cuts, striking like a violent storm and driving rain, leaving the enemy hard-pressed to defend.
Heaven Thunder: Intensifying the flow of inner force, a single cut falls with the might of a thunderclap that can overawe the opponent.
Thunder Burst: A supreme art created by Lin Tianhao that strengthens the explosive power of the blade art, making the blade's force echo through the air.
๐ซ๏ธ Mountain Mist
The Storm Thunder Sect's foundational inner art, emphasizing sensing heaven and earth and borrowing force to use force, as changeable and unpredictable as mountain mist.
Wind Call: Sensing the surroundings and borrowing the power of heaven and earth to raise one's own attack and defense.
Thunder Walk: Circulating qi like lightning racing along, unleashing hidden potential so that strength surges in an instant.
Mist Hide: Circulating inner force so that one's form and breath become as hard to grasp as mountain mist.
๐ Mountain Step
The Storm Thunder Sect's lightness skill, designed for mountain terrain โ like wind, like mist, impossible to pin down.
Peak Dash: Dodging like a gust of mountain wind, moving rapidly and hard to catch.
Water Walk: Using the lay of the land to push lightness skill to its limit, able to shoot upward or cross terrain in an instant.
Mist Trace: Movement as elusive as drifting mist, so that the enemy cannot predict one's actions.
Sect Leader | Chen Wenbin
Founder and leader of the Storm Thunder Sect, about forty, tall, with a resolute face and bright, piercing eyes. Naturally brilliant, he combined the learning of the Holy Academy with a foundation in Shushan martial arts; with extraordinary insight, he founded his sect on the twin supreme arts of the Storm Axe and the Storm Blade.
Personal Weapon: The thunder axe "Shaking Thunder" โ a heavy, powerful battle axe with a broad blade and a thick back, suited to mighty strikes such as Thunder Cleave. It is said a piece of meteoric iron is set into the axe, and when it swings, a faint rumble of thunder can be heard.
Chen Wenbin looks bold and free-spirited, but carries a deep hatred within. He has never forgotten the massacre of his parents' family; he keeps his resolve for revenge buried in his heart, waiting for the right moment.
Deputy Sect Leader | Lin Tianhao
Chen Wenbin's sworn brother and the Storm Thunder Sect's deputy leader, about forty, sturdy and powerful, rugged-faced and hearty by nature. He excels at blade arts, co-founded the Storm Thunder Sect with Chen Wenbin, and is co-creator of the Storm Blade, with a focus on explosive power and the rhythm of blade work.
Personal Weapon: The gale blade "Wind Edge" โ a sharp, nimble long blade with a narrow body and an edge as thin as paper, suited to speed-type blade arts such as Wind Thunder.
Grand Elder | Uncle Liu
The Storm Thunder Sect's grand elder, about sixty, lean-faced and refined in manner. He was once head of an outer organization of the Holy Academy in Qingzhou, with a powerful intelligence network and a gift for strategy. Admiring the character of Chen Wenbin's father, Chen Hui, he chose to serve the Chen family as its steward, later followed Chen Wenbin to the Changfeng Republic, and became the Storm Thunder Sect's chief adviser.
War Hall Master | Feng Haishi
Master of the Storm Thunder Sect's War Hall, about forty-five, built like an iron tower and knotted with muscle. Once a frontier general of the Shuntian Dynasty, he fled to the Changfeng Republic after being framed. He excels at the Storm Axe and is Chen Wenbin's most important sparring partner in axe arts.
Personal Weapon: The thunder axe "Earth Splitter" โ a battle axe weighing eighty jin, with a broad, thick blade and a haft wrapped in hemp rope for grip, suited to frontal assaults.
Lightness Skill Master | Lin Xue
The Storm Thunder Sect's master of lightness skill, about twenty-five, slender, with delicate features and a calm temperament. She comes from a noble family of the Shuntian Dynasty and excels at the "Mountain Step," moving with great speed and able to subdue enemies in an instant with her lightness skill.
Personal Gear: The Mist Shadow Cloak โ a specially made, light, thin cloak that dampens the flow of one's breath when worn and improves concealment; used together with the Mountain Mist inner art, its effect is doubled.
Fist Gang: Hostile. Like Thunderbolt Hall, the Storm Thunder Sect is a thorn in the Fist Gang's side. The Fist Gang has tried many times to infiltrate Storm Mountain, and has been driven back each time by War Hall disciples led by Feng Haishi.
Thunderbolt Hall: Friendly. Both are righteous forces of the Changfeng Republic and have joined hands many times against the Fist Gang. Chen Wenbin and Zhuge Yanwen admire each other and often exchange letters.
Wealth Sect: Very friendly. Kong Ning was once a disciple of Chen Wenbin's parents, and is also his senior sister and patron. She was an important supporter in the Storm Thunder Sect's early days. The two sides still frequently keep in touch, and most of the sect's funds come through her help. Members of the Storm Thunder Sect sometimes even call Kong Ning its "Outer Sect Leader."
Shuntian Dynasty: Hostile. Chen Wenbin's parents died through the conspiracy of the Shuntian Dynasty's Grand Marshal Chang Yanjiao โ a feud that cannot share the same sky. The Storm Thunder Sect secretly shelters exiles persecuted by the Shuntian Dynasty.
Shushan Sect: Friendly. Chen Wenbin's mother came from the Shushan Sect, and the two sides share this bond. The Shushan Sect has secretly provided martial texts to the Storm Thunder Sect.
Holy Academy: Friendly. Chen Wenbin's father came from the Holy Academy, and Uncle Liu also has close ties with the Academy. The Academy occasionally sends people to come for scholarly exchange.
