Fifty years ago, the Commercial Republic was still a chaotic city-state ruled jointly by pirates and merchants. At that time a wandering troupe master from the Western Continent named Oscar led a company of actors on tour through the republic's towns. Their plays were magnificent, and every performance sold out.
But Oscar had another identity no one knew of โ he believed that "all the world's a stage, and all the people merely players." He trained his actors not only in acting, but in disguise, mimicry, and the art of reading minds. Every one of the troupe's performances was an intelligence-gathering operation; every role might be a disguised observer.
After Oscar died, the troupe passed to his adopted daughter, "Thousand Faces." Thousand Faces brought the troupe to the Commercial Republic's capital, Goldflow City, bought an abandoned old theater, and turned its underground spaces into a secret base. From then on, the name "Faceless Theater Troupe" began to circulate in the world of intelligence โ so long as you could pay the price, the troupe could give you anyone's secrets, and could also turn you into anyone.
Today the Faceless Theater Troupe is the largest intelligence organization in the Commercial Republic, and also its most mysterious power. No one knows how many members the troupe has, no one has ever seen the true face of its leader, "Thousand Faces," and no one can even be sure "Thousand Faces" truly exists. Some say Thousand Faces is a woman, some say an old man, and some say Thousand Faces is not one person at all, but an identity shared by the troupe's core members.
Yet the troupe faces a deep rift within. Some members believe the troupe should focus on art โ acting, singing, painting โ and treat intelligence work as a sideline; others believe the troupe should use its unique abilities to play a larger role in the Commercial Republic's power games. The rift between the Art faction and the Spy faction is steadily widening.
๐๏ธ Geography and Key Locations
Old Oak Theater: The Faceless Theater Troupe's headquarters, on the edge of the Lower City โ an old theater three hundred years old. From outside the building is dilapidated, its sign dangling over the door as if about to fall at any moment. But push open its heavy doors, and the stage inside is still magnificent, its red velvet curtains embroidered with golden mask totems. Beneath the theater lies a vast labyrinth, with secret passages leading to every corner of Goldflow City.
Hall of Mirrors: A secret chamber deep underground whose walls are covered entirely in mirrors; it is said that troupe leader Thousand Faces never receives outsiders anywhere but the Hall of Mirrors. The hall's design makes it impossible for anyone to tell where Thousand Faces truly is โ countless reflections fill the mirrors, and the real body hides among them.
Mask Alley: A famous back alley in the Lower City, its walls hung on both sides with every kind of mask โ from simple cloth hoods to exquisite porcelain masks, from stage characters to gods, buddhas, ghosts, and demons, everything imaginable. This is the Faceless Theater Troupe's window to the outside world; anyone who wishes to hire the troupe waits here for a "go-between" to appear.
The Gilded Dream Casino: Goldflow City's largest casino, run on the surface by a wealthy merchant family of the Commercial Republic, but in truth an important outer stronghold of the Faceless Theater Troupe. Beneath the casino is an intelligence exchange, where spies from every nation buy and sell information.
๐ Internal Factions
Art Faction: Holds that the troupe should return to its roots and focus on artistic creation such as drama, music, and painting. They see intelligence work only as a necessary evil to keep the troupe running, not something that should become its core. Art faction members are mostly veteran actors, musicians, and stage designers; they rehearse new plays in the theater's underground rehearsal hall and occasionally perform publicly in Goldflow City's theaters. The Art faction's motto: "The stage is our home."
Spy Faction: Holds that the troupe should actively use its unique abilities to play a larger role in the Commercial Republic's power games. They believe art is merely a disguise, and intelligence is the troupe's true value. Spy faction members are mostly the younger generation of "actors," masters of disguise and psychological manipulation who move between nations gathering intelligence and influencing decisions. The Spy faction's motto: "The world is a stage, and we are the leads."
The conflict between the two factions is intensifying. The Art faction accuses the Spy faction of "betraying Oscar's original intent," while the Spy faction mocks the Art faction for "shutting itself away in troubled times." Troupe leader Thousand Faces remains silent to this day, and no one knows which side she stands on.
โ๏ธ Martial Arts of the Faceless Theater Troupe
The Faceless Theater Troupe's martial arts are not aimed at killing, but center on "performance" โ an actor's highest achievement is to make the audience believe completely in the role they play. To play a role well, an actor must master the weapons that role uses. An actor playing a general must be able to use a sword, one playing a hunter must use a bow, one playing a guard must use a spear. Over the years, troupe members have developed a unique "Any Weapon" skill โ able to use any weapon, but a master of none.
Yet combined with the troupe's "Thousand Faces, No Form" inner method and "Acting," masters can do something almost unbelievable in battle: copy โ observing an opponent's techniques in a short time, then striking back with the same weapon and the same techniques. Not imitation, but "becoming" that opponent.
๐ Inner Method
Thousand Faces, No Form (Thousand Faces)
The Faceless Theater Troupe's foundational inner method, which comes from Oscar's teaching: "You are not you; you are a mirror. Whoever the mirror reflects, that is who you are." Practitioners must cast off their own sense of identity and make themselves a blank sheet of paper before they can imitate anyone perfectly. This is no simple disguise, but "becoming" another person from the depths of the soul โ not "acting convincingly," but "being." It is said that Thousand Faces can remember every detail of hundreds of roles at once and switch identities in the blink of an eye, so that not even those closest to her can tell the difference.
Those who reach the depths of this method can "become" their opponent in battle โ understanding their techniques, their rhythm, their weaknesses. When you understand a person completely, you can defeat them with their own weapon and their own techniques.
๐ก๏ธ Martial Arts
Any Weapon
Because of the demands of acting, members of the Faceless Theater Troupe must learn how to use every kind of weapon โ blades, swords, spears, staffs, axes, whips, daggers, muskets, even ropes and benches. Not to master them, but to "look the part."
Weapon Handling: Any weapon placed in hand can be grasped in its basic use within a short time โ at least enough to look like someone who knows how to use it. Masters can become familiar with a weapon they've never seen before within a few breaths.
Role Weapons: Whatever role you play, you use that role's weapon. A sword when playing a general, a bow when playing a hunter, a cutlass when playing a sailor. Switching weapons is as smooth as changing masks.
Improvised Arms: When no weapon is at hand, anything can become one โ a wine cup, a chair, a candlestick, a plate. Masters can fend off a dagger attack with a soup spoon.
๐ Copycat
The Faceless Theater Troupe's highest combat art, which can only be performed when the "Thousand Faces, No Form" inner method and "Acting" have both reached a very high level. Its principle: when you can completely "become" another person, you can copy their abilities.
Observe: Watching the opponent's techniques, rhythm, and habits in battle. Masters can read an opponent's martial style within a few exchanges.
Imitate: Copying the opponent's techniques with the same weapon. Not simply mimicking movements, but understanding how their inner force flows, the rhythm of their breathing, and how they generate power. Masters can unleash exactly the same supreme technique as their opponent โ so perfectly that even the opponent can't tell which is real.
Counter: Once you fully understand an opponent's techniques, you can find their weakness. With their weapon and their techniques, you strike back when they least expect it. Masters can answer an opponent's supreme technique in the very instant it is unleashed with the same supreme technique โ like a counterattack from inside a mirror.
The Limits of Copycat: This technique cannot create something from nothing; there must be an opponent to "copy." Facing a weapon or martial art never seen before requires a longer period of observation. Copied techniques match the power of the original, but can never surpass it โ a mirror is never brighter than what it reflects.
Actors of the Faceless Theater Troupe must understand their characters' inner worlds precisely, and in battle this ability becomes mind reading โ judging a target's true thoughts and next move by observing micro-expressions, body language, and changes in tone of voice.
Reading Faces: Judging from shifts in tone whether someone is lying, and reading their emotions from micro-expressions.
Predicting Moves: Anticipating the direction of an opponent's next attack from their gaze, the tension in their muscles, and the shifting of their weight. Masters know where an enemy will strike before they move.
Mirror Reflection: Advanced mind reading. Not only predicting the enemy's attack, but "reflecting" the enemy's thoughts โ the moment the enemy decides to strike left, you already know it and dodge in advance. This art is like a mirror, reflecting what is in the enemy's heart. Only a few in the troupe have mastered it.
๐ญ Acting
Acting is the core skill of the Faceless Theater Troupe, the cornerstone of every other ability. A troupe member's strength depends largely on how completely they can "become" another person.
Character Building: Deeply understanding a target's personality, habits, way of speaking, and way of thinking, and "becoming" that person from the inside out. Masters can fully inhabit an unfamiliar role within a few days, so that not even the target's family and friends notice.
Improvisation: Reacting in character in an instant when the unexpected happens. When a plan goes wrong, masters can adapt as their character without showing a single crack.
Emotional Shifts: Switching emotions in an instant โ laughter, tears, anger, fear, like flipping a switch. Masters can make an opponent lower their guard amid easy conversation and draw out the most secret information.
Mirror Step
The Faceless Theater Troupe's unique footwork, inspired by blocking on the stage โ every step an actor takes on stage is precisely calculated, so as not to block the lights while letting the audience see clearly. The Mirror Step brings this precision into battle: every step lands in the enemy's blind spot, and every movement leaves the enemy unable to predict it.
Reflex Dodge: Used together with mind reading. When mind reading predicts the direction of an enemy's attack, the body reacts faster than instinct โ like light striking a mirror and bouncing away, your body is already dodging before the enemy's attack has even been launched. This technique demands extreme mental strength and physical coordination; only Thousand Faces and a few others in the troupe have mastered it.
Stage Blocking: Moving through complex terrain as smoothly as on a stage, using obstacles, light and shadow, and crowds as cover so the enemy cannot lock on.
๐ฃ๏ธ Intelligence Gathering
The Faceless Theater Troupe's core business is intelligence, and its members are masters of every technique for gathering it.
Infiltration: Slipping into a target organization under a false identity for long-term undercover work. Masters can lie hidden in a target organization for years without being discovered, gradually earning trust and gaining access to its core secrets.
Interrogation: Extracting intelligence from prisoners or targets. Not through torture, but through psychological manipulation โ leading the other person to reveal secrets of their own accord, setting traps in conversation, and letting them leak crucial information without realizing it.
Intelligence Analysis: Piecing a complete picture of intelligence together from fragmented information. Masters can predict how things will unfold even with very little intelligence, drawing on their understanding of human nature and the situation.
Troupe Leader | Thousand Faces
Leader of the Faceless Theater Troupe, whose true identity no one knows. Thousand Faces never shows her real face; every appearance comes with a different mask, different clothes, a different voice. Sometimes an elegant noblewoman, sometimes a slovenly old man, sometimes an innocent child. No one can be sure whether Thousand Faces is man or woman, old or young, or even real at all.
It is said that Thousand Faces' "Thousand Faces, No Form" has reached perfection, letting her become anyone at any moment โ not only in appearance, but as if her very soul had changed. "Copycat" comes to her as naturally as breathing. She never carries out missions herself, only plans and commands. Now she faces the greatest crisis within the troupe: the struggle between the Art faction and the Spy faction. She keeps her silence, and no one knows which side she stands on.
Art Faction Leader | Old Orpheus
The troupe's most senior actor, nearly seventy, once Oscar's star pupil. He has spent his whole life on the stage, playing kings, beggars, generals, and madmen. He believes true acting needs no disguise, only "becoming." He holds that the troupe should return to its roots and focus on art.
Old Orpheus never takes part in intelligence work, and only rehearses new plays in the underground rehearsal hall. His famous saying: "Wear a mask long enough and you can't take it off. But we are actors โ we should know when to put the mask on, and when to take it off."
Spy Faction Leader | Black Crow
The youngest of the troupe's core members, about thirty, with a cold face and sharp eyes. He is a master of disguise and mind reading, able to draw out the most secret intelligence amid easy conversation. He believes that in troubled times, the troupe cannot simply watch from the sidelines.
Black Crow holds that the troupe should actively step into the Commercial Republic's power games, and even steer the course of nations. His "Copycat" is not as strong as Thousand Faces', but he can already copy an opponent's basic techniques. His famous saying: "The world is a stage, but we aren't just the actors โ we're the playwrights too."
Master of Intelligence | Mr. Mirror
The troupe's foremost intelligence analyst, about fifty, who always wears an expressionless white mask. He never leaves the secret chamber beneath the theater, facing mountains of intelligence files all day long and piecing fragmented information from every nation into a complete picture.
No one can match Mr. Mirror's "Intelligence Analysis" โ after reading a single report, he can build a three-dimensional web of relationships in his head and predict events that may come to pass. His predictions are accurate as much as ninety percent of the time, and troupe members call him "the human crystal ball." But his body has paid a heavy price for it โ years hunched over his desk have badly deformed his spine, and his legs have long since been unable to walk. His famous saying: "Intelligence is like a mirror. What it shows is never the truth โ only what you want to see."
Street Performer | Jester
The troupe's outermost member, on the surface just one of the street performers seen everywhere in Goldflow City โ red nose, painted exaggerated grin, juggling at the mouth of Mask Alley. His true role is the troupe's "go-between" โ everyone who wants to hire the troupe first finds him and speaks the code word.
Jester seems half mad and talks in circles, and no one takes him seriously. But that is exactly his best disguise. His powers of observation are razor-sharp; he can pick out spies from every nation in a crowd and report their information back to the troupe. His famous saying: "A jester needs no name, because no one ever remembers a jester's face."
Commercial Republic Chamber of Commerce Parliament: The relationship between the Faceless Theater Troupe and the Chamber of Commerce is one of "mutual use, mutual wariness." Many members of the Chamber of Commerce Parliament are the troupe's clients โ they buy their rivals' secrets from the troupe, and pay for the troupe's "silence." The troupe, in turn, gains political protection and commercial intelligence through Chamber members. Thousand Faces' attitude: "We take no sides; we only sell intelligence. Whoever bids highest is our client."
Spy Networks of Every Nation: The Commercial Republic is the center of every nation's spy activity, and the Faceless Theater Troupe's relationship with these spies is extremely complicated โ sometimes partners (sharing intelligence), sometimes competitors (fighting over the same intelligence), sometimes enemies (exposing one another's identities). The troupe's rule: "In Goldflow City you can be anyone, but you can't let anyone know who you are."
Wealth Sect: Client and threat at once. The Wealth Sect is the Faceless Theater Troupe's largest intelligence client, buying commercial intelligence on every nation; but it also stays wary of the troupe โ the secrets the troupe holds are enough to shake the foundations of the Twelve Families.
Pirate Alliance: A cooperative relationship. The Pirate Alliance needs the troupe's intelligence to evade the navies of every nation, and the troupe needs the Pirate Alliance's ships to move people and supplies. The two sides have a fixed liaison point at the Port of Black Tides.
Tiandao Alliance: Indirect dealings. The Tiandao Alliance needs the troupe's intelligence to expand its business, and the troupe needs the Tiandao Alliance's smuggling network to move people and supplies. The two sides have a fixed liaison point in "Mask Alley."
